AUTUMN - Osen Vechna reviews

Here we talk about gothic doom metal band from Ekaterinburg, Russia. Not much info about this band but sure you will interest after you heard their latest album entitled Osen Vechna (Autumn is Eternal mean in english). All tracks in this album using Russian           languange. This album contain 7 tracks combining some elements between romantic gothic metal and doom metal, male and female vocals style into normal not high                      pitched or growling. All composition built by interesting riffing between guitar, bass, technical drumming with touching desperate violin. Autumn just tried to play goth and doomish with standart style but wrapped by heavy guitar composition as usually bands
dealt with kind of this style, however they tried to asserting the identity by it self so their musical style not really typical of any bands else. Another promising gothic doom metal from Russia!

How do you think what kind of music could play group with such name? Of course doom metal. It's not funeral doom or doom/gothic - it's 100% pure doom metal. Slowly but strong ryffs, pure male vocals, alto - these charachterize the music, AUTUM plays. Er... played, because as we can see on inlay "This is the last AUTUM album, the band finishes its existing." Said, as the music. But I can't tell that it's melancholy and totally depressive, no, you can feel power in the songs. Power, lyrism and sadness...

I don’t know from what part of Russia these Autumn Come from…this band, unknown to me until today, plays a sort of ‘ethereal’ doom metal completely sang in their mother language. Unforunately I can’t give you more informations because the booklet (very impressive the cover artwork that marries perfectly with the title that in English means ‘Autumn is eternal’) is formed by a sheet completely wrote in Cyrillic alphabet (also the titles of the songs!!! Fortunately Stygian Crypt put on his site the titles of the songs written in latin alphabet and translations in english) with a photo of the band; there are no information about recording and provenience or contact of the band…fortunately I found that the band has a site where I knew that the band has recorded two demo tapes and a self produced debut cd fully downloadable from the site itself.

The few informations of the booklet permits to concentrate completely on the music and to judge the band for his capability that, must be said, is very good. Autumn plays a classic doom metal well structured that is never too heavy and filled with some acoustic inserts and ethereal melodies and in certain moments they seem to me a bit too gothic or ‘light’. Distorted guitar, where present, is left in second plan prefering clean guitar melodies and viola (exact! Not violin!), the voice of the singer (never growly, clean and melancholic) and female vocals inserts (to be honest they seem a bit low…but remain pefectly hearable and not ‘baroque’ like some gothic bands); maybe the work lose some of its heaviness, but the result is that the songs have an atmosphere more ‘gentle and dreamy’. The band remembered me an improbable cocktail of Promethean and Anathema…it must be said that Autumn have enough personality to be remembered as an original band and not as a clone of this or that band. Listening to a song like ‘Demon, Rvushiysia V Nebo’ you’ll see that Autumn have the capability to have a good career: composition variety, melody, breaks, acoustic inserts…even the other songs are of high quality, but I prefer these guys when they are more ‘sweet’ and not ‘rough’ (‘Zaklinanie’ is a good song but pays too much a tribute to My Dying Bride), they are more various and inspired. I suggest you to contact the label via mail or to buy the cd directly from the label’s internet site (Andrew is a person highly available and trustable); don’t lose a jewel like this!

First of all I have to warn you that this is NOT the Dutch gothic-metal band Autumn. So, surprised fans of the Dutch band can leave disappointed or read on and learn more about this interesting Russian band with the same name. In the last few years I have stumbled upon quite many interesting Russian bands in nearly all genres, Tangrycan, Tvangeste, Rossomahaar and Blackdeath to name a few. And now this Autumn can undoubtedly added to this group of interesting bands. The band was born in 1993 and went through different line-up problems, name changes, language changes and eventually even genre-changes. They use their native language for their songs, which gives it some extra interesting dimension, but along came some problems. I can't read/write/speak a single word Russian, and all information (even the CD title itself) are written in the Russian language. I found out that the title in our Latin alphabet and it is called "Osen Vechna..." which means "Autumn Is Eternal...". Everything points in the doom genre, and that is actually quite right!Although the (superb!) cover shows us a green tree the band's music is indeed quite autumnal and sounds like a sweet depression. A doomy sound that is built up with slow riffing, multi-vocal parts (grunts, spoken words, clean voices and some female vocals as well), a thrilling violin and some nice piano parts. To shorten this summery: everything a doom CD should contain. Heavy parts are greatly alternated with the easier parts and are the empty spots are filled with the great works of the (female? I can't read the names in Russian, and the translation doesn't seem to teach me more about the gender of the members) violist. This girl (I just suppose it is the girl on the picture - the only resemblance with the Dutch Autumn by the way, a nice girl in the line-up!) know how to play her instrument very well, and remind me more than often on the greatest of the greatest violists from the classical-genre. To me one of the better doom releases I recently heard...

Living in Russia is not an easy thing. That's why Russian music sounds so sad. Cheap deduction, I know... Nevertheless, I guess what most listeners tend to forget when they hear Doom Metal is that the ways of sadness are somehow very parallel to those of beauty and that every single expression of grief can rapidly turn into a jubilant serenade if interpreted with a sensitive spirit. In the case of "Osen Vechna", even though Autumn has clearly been inspired by Moonspell, My Dying Bride, Dissolving Of Prodigy and other European Doom Metal bands of the nineties, one can effortlessly perceive that the band transcended its inner melancholy to finally come up with an awesome suite of airy and atmospheric songs that - together - form a very coherent ensemble of lights and colors. Autumn are not your average eastern impersonators and are thus highly recommended to check out.

This band called Autumn is from Russia. They released this cd in 2003. What should i say about this album. This is very romantic Doom/Death Metal with Gothic influence fans of the older work of Anathema would like this very much. I like this very much its mid tempo Doom/Death Metal with very beautiful guitar riffs, drum riffs, the vocals are also good but what i like the most on this cd is that they use a violin in every song and that is very beautiful in all parts that you can here it. Well this cd contains 7 songs. I have the Russian version so i cant read what titels there are but at there website you can read the titels of the songs. Well for people who loves Romantic Doom/Death Metal than this cd is excellent to have in your collection.

A 1.5 minute viola intro and you feel yourself plunged into the emptiness of cold autumn. The atmosphere is provided by the Russian metal band from Ekaterinburg which is called "Autumn".  The last CD of the band is called "Autumn Is Eternal". I can't say the same thing about the band though, as after the releasing the album the band was disbanded.
The band is gone just like yellow leaves under the snow, but their beautiful doomy music is left to us.  Guitar drive, depression of death, melancholy of despair. You can find everything you wish on the album! Even the slight touch of Christian feeling can't spoil the lyrics which are written in Russian.
The atmosphere of depression which is created by doom\death metal can hardly be varied, as everything seems to be polished here already and it's extremely difficult to produce something worthwhile in the genre. I have to admit though that "Autumn" managed to record a 100% quality album. The emotional parts with heavy guitars give place to a perfect silence, which adds some mystical touch to the overall atmosphere.
Now I'll give you a short description of the album. (The names of the tracks are given in brackets).
A hardly distinguishable sound of drumsticks and nervous tremor of viola ("Don't Believe In Despair") change into guitar solos and solid bass ("Autumn Is Eternal"). An extremely beautiful and yet filled with insanity ("The Spell") is a fast, melodic track.
While listening to it you have a feel as if the sudden gust breaks the church stained glass window. The song is forceful and energetic and yet has a changeable tempo. The two vocals call to one another. The clean male vocals dispel the darkness  it generates tension with an inhuman scream and we  doubt if this battle will ever have a winner.
But this dark spell is almost defeated and the scarlet rays of the rising sun can be seen in the sky.  The victory is won but it brings no joy. ("When Our Eyes Knew No Tears"). Slow and calm pacification develops into a rough guitar sound ("Despair"). The last track of the album ("It Will All Vanish, It Will All Pass...")  is full of sadness which is yet giving some hope for the happy future. The sound of war drums, weeping viola and the vocals which are submitted to the loss... Still the nature refuses to surrender. The last song ends up with some heavy, high-speed guitars which pile up  the autumn leaves and throw it away to the listener.
A perfect way to say goodbye to the fans...
To conclude I would like to talk about some good and bad points of the album.
The good thing is that the lyrics are easy to understand though sometimes I don't share the band's opinion on what they sing about. So what?
There are two types of male vocals on the album - clean vocals which are distinctly heard and  the silent whispering which remind of the autumn wind.  Sometimes (tracks 2 and 3) it seemed to me that the frontman's nose was blocked because of the antritis but this feeling soon passed. The quality of the recording is quite good. There are no drawbacks about it.
The only thing which really surprised me stood out against the background of other instruments. This isn't typical for doom-metal, though it makes the album sound heavier. A booklet is another thing I didn't like.
The design of it was very poor. I guess such quality lyrics should be printed on a better booklet so that reading it would be a pleasure.
To conclude I would like to say that "Autumn Is Eternal" is a quality CD which is comprehensible to almost every music-lover and not only to the fans of metal music.
I assure you of that.

MpaK - 8 èç 10 / ECLIPSE  Russian metal zine.

I would like to present you the new album of the Russian (it's from Ekaterinburg if I'm not mistaken) metal band which was yet unknown to me. It is called "Autumn" and their new album is "Autumn Is Eternal".
From the name of the band and the album it is clear that the band is playing doom\gothic metal in the vein of the bands which were famous in the middle of the 90-s. This album reminded me of the classical stuff by "Evereve", "My Dying Bride", "Katatonia", "Lake Of Tears" and some others.
This album even has almost the same name as one of the aforementioned "Lake Of Tears" ("Forever Autumn"). Though I should say these two bands have very little in common.
To be honest I liked "Autumn Is Eternal" very much.
A quality recorded (which is I'm glad to say not so rare nowadays) atmospheric doom with clear  male vocals and a slight touch of melodic growling. Also I can mention some beautiful viola playing which is performed by Ludmila, who is a very nice girl indeed. (Her performance is sure to be approved by the fans of the genre). All the lyrics are written in Russian and it's a good side of the album if you ask me. (I think it's better to sing beautifully in your native Russian than  doing  it in English with bad pronunciation.).
The lyrics (as well as the design of the CD) are quite simple. It fits the overall atmosphere perfectly well. All the songs of the album are very touching and easy to remember.
Now I have some bad news to tell you. According to the booklet "Autumn Is Eternal" is the last album of the band (a pity I didn't manage to listen to previous ones) and "Autumn" is going to be disbanded. The fact makes me feel really sad. It is always so! Such great groups as "Autumn" disband and the crap like "Satirial" keep releasing new albums. Come back, you guys! I'll be waiting! (no kidding I really will.) I guess I won't be the only one to wait for the reunion of the band as I'm sure there are many fans of quality doom-metal in Russia.
Come on, guys, come back! You shouldn't quit after releasing such a good album!

This is how I usually work   I go to the post-office and get several packages with promo CDs. One of the packages is from Stygian Crypt Productions. I got two CDs One of them is a debut album of  "Ambrazura" . The second one was as far as I can understand the only release of the band from The Urals which is called  "Autumn".
I have to say that the album of  "Ambrazura"  really disappointed me. I was afraid that  "Autumn"  would be another disappointment for me. Thank God I was wrong. Judging from the design of the booklet and the names of the songs  "Autumn"  plays a quality doom-metal. Or gothic-doom. Very sad and slow-paced. There are two types of vocals on the album   nice, clean vocals and growling. Also there are some viola passages on the album. All the lyrics are in Russian which is quite surprising for this style of music, though I should say it didn't make the album sound any worse.
The sound of   Autumn  can be defined as the mixture of  My Dying Bride  ( "The Angel And The Dark River" )  "Lake Of Tears"  ( "Headstones" ) plus the slight touch of  "Agatha Christie"  (the Russian rock band).  "Ambrazura"  is crap in comparison with "Autumn" .   It's really a pity that this album of  "Autumn"  is the last one.
The group was being disbanded not so long ago.

Kai Mathias Stalhammar, Vae Solis zine 7/10

Deep obscure dark doom metal act coming from Russia, this band is one of the most sad acts aborted by the icy lands, symphonic guitars, drums with cold mid tempos and melancholic slow voices create the decadent atmospheres of AUTUMN’s music, with echoes of ANATHEMA, KATATONIA (old), NOVEMBERS DOOM and SILENT CRY. Some tracks have long introductions with strings and depressive keyboards; the vocalist seems to be literally crying in some music, as in the third and fourth songs of the album (the titles are in Russian - impossible of reproducing here). The album is very emotive and certainly will please all lovers of the deepest obscure doom feelings!

What is it with Russia and Doom/Gothic Metal bands? I don't think I've known a country that has more releases in this genre. And specially from the Russian label Stygian Crypt Productions, they are experts in finding these bands. Sure, it's not the same in quality as bands like My Dying Bride or something, but the feeling is there and anyone who likes and feels the passion towards the Doom genre can't deny it.

So from Russia hails Autumn. Formed back in 1993, they have released three full-length albums up to date. Our paths have already crossed, actually, since not that long ago I had the chance to review their latest piece of work entitled "Black Wings" and I was quite happy with it. After reading a little more about it I discovered that their previous album entitled "Osen Vechna" had some very good reviews too and so I wanted to check it out for myself. Few months later and here it is.

First thing to notice here is the cover. Very simple yet very in touch with the music itself. In fact that was something I had noticed before I actually got the album. After the review on "Black Wings" and reading the review on this one I knew I just had to have it. The music itself is as I would expect. A mixture between Doom and Gothic Metal, but more Doom oriented than anything else. Only seven songs here but with a total time length that lasts up to almost 40 minutes.

One thing I don't usually mention in any review but I really noticed here is the bass work, it's really important to keep the pace of the songs and you can actually tell that. The guitars are also very clean and well performed, same as keyboards, another good point for the Russians.
But the album is all about that, really. It doesn't impress you like other albums of the genre, like I mentioned before, but it's something any fan of the Doom/Gothic Metal style would take interest in. Just too bad about the lyrics which are all in Russian, but you can find translations online.
